Indian River County Sheriff Captain Milo Thornton has filed to run for Indian River County Sheriff, after much consultation with friends, family, and mentors along with prayer.

Thornton made the announcement early on the morning of April 7th, 2023 in a Facebook post. His announcement mainly focused on accountability and the good character necessary for the Sheriff’s Department to serve the Indian River County Community in the best way possible.

“During my 25-plus year career, I have maintained a high standard of integrity, which I believe is nonnegotiable in the criminal justice field,” said Thornton. “The main function and purpose of the sheriff’s office is to ensure public safety and operate a safe and humane correctional facility. Of the many issues facing the law enforcement community today, maintaining public trust is our main objective. Our deputies are in a position of trust and responsibility for the community. I believe it is important to continually promote high expectations and a clear mission for the sheriff’s office.”

Thornton has been a long-speculated candidate to run for Indian River County Sheriff, with many in Indian River County wanting him to run.

Thornton will be running in the Republican Primary against Fellsmere Police Sheriff Keith Touchberry. It is not yet known if Sheriff Eric Flowers will file to run for reelection.

Whoever wins the Republican Primary Election will be running against No Party Affiliated (NPA) candidate Deborah Cooney, who lost by massive margins to Sheriff Eric Flowers in 2020.
