Brian Barefoot Files for 2024 Reelection Campaign

Indian River County School Board Member Brian Barefoot (Vero Beach – District 5) has filed to run for reelection for his school board seat. Barefoot appointed himself as Treasurer of his campaign.

Barefoot’s filing comes as Governor Ron DeSantis has targeted Barefoot and fellow Board Member Dr. Peggy Jones Ed.D (Vero Beach – District 3) for removal from the Indian River County School Board. (Related: Barefoot and Jones Opposed by DeSantis and Team In 2024 Election)

Governor DeSantis’s picks for which School Board Members in Florida to oppose was done with assistance from the national directors for Moms for Liberty.

“Brian Barefoot filed to run because he was put on the DeSantis list of school board members across the state that have failed children,” said Moms for Liberty – Indian River, Florida Chairman Jennifer Pippin. “From breaking optional masking laws, voting to put pornographic books back in the hands of children, falling asleep at business meetings, voting to not put donated constitutions in the hands of children and more had landed him on this list. Parents, grandparents and community members are paying attention. He absolutely has the right to file to run, but his voting record will follow him. Because the community is aware, now, the Governor is aware. Pippin also serves as a Co-Founder of Pro-Constitution Non-Partisan Group We the People Indian River County.

Governor DeSantis’s political committee Friends of Ron DeSantis reportedly spent $2.1 million in the 2022 Primary and General Elections, supporting various school board candidates across Florida, including Indian River County School Board Member Jackie Rosario (Vero Beach – District 2) in her reelection campaign for her school board seat.

Barefoot notably was censured by the Republican Executive Committee of Indian River County in September 2021 for voting to enforce a masking mandate that went against Governor DeSantis’s Executive Order to prohibit such mandates.

Barefoot previously stated multiple times he intended to only serve one term on the School Board. Barefoot has purposely decided to seek a 2nd term because of Governor DeSantis’s opposition to him in the upcoming election. (Related: Brian Barefoot Is Asleep at the Wheel)

Barefoot previously served as Mayor of Indian River Shores prior to serving on the Indian River County School Board.
