June 1, 2023

Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers (R) filed to run for reelection on June 1, 2023. Flowers appointed himself Treasurer of his campaign.

In his announcement, Flowers said he was honored to be running for reelection as Sheriff of Indian River County.

Flowers said in his announcement he was proud of the work the Indian River County Sheriff’s Department has done under his tenure as Sheriff. The announcement specifically pointed out bringing the Sheriff’s Department into the 21st Century.

There have been reportedly morale problems within the Indian River County Sheriff’s Department, which has been a concern to members of the Indian River County community.

Flowers was first elected to office as Sheriff in 2020, succeeding then Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar (R). Loar currently serves as an Indian River County Commissioner in County Commission District 4.

Flowers will be running against Captain Milo Thornton of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Department and Fellsmere Police Chief Keith Touchberry in the Republican Primary.

The winner of the Republican Primary will be running against No Party Affiliated (NPA) Candidate Deborah Cooney. Cooney previously ran in 2020, losing to Flowers in the general election.
